FAQs for teachers

Are all lessons free?

Free and discounted lessons are available on a case-by-case basis. The number of free lessons we can provide is largely determined by how much financial support we receive from patrons and donors. Free lessons are a big part of BMM, but not it’s sole purpose.

How does a student qualify for free or discounted lessons?

Eligibility for free or discounted lessons could be determined simply by the student submitting a letter explaining their case for qualification. Documentation of the student’s financial situation is not required, but it can help the student’s case. In addition to financial status, a student’s expressed level of interest and dedication can be factors of their eligibility. A student’s level of proficiency is not a factor.

Is BMM a school?

Not exactly, not yet at least. BMM is an moniker used by musician Tom Kersey to refer to his philosophy of music education, his activities as a music teacher, and a loosely affiliated group of independent music teachers with similar ideals. Tom hopes to expand BMM into a physical school and much more, including a concert series, podcast, book series, record label and recording studio.

Where is BMM?

BMM’s home base is in Tampa, Florida in historic Seminole Heights, with other sites throughout the Tampa Bay area. In-person lessons are taught at teachers’ homes, parks, schools, and more. Online lessons are offered to anyone on Earth or elsewhere via Zoom, Facetime and other platforms.

* COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS ARE A PRIORITY, THOUGH THE SPECIFICS OF THIS POLICY ARE DETERMINED BY EACH INDIVIDUAL TEACHER AND THEIR STUDENTS.

What instruments are taught?

All bowed string instruments, guitars, piano/keyboards, voice, ukulele, improvisation, composition, theory and more.

Are lessons in-person or online?

Both. It is up to the teacher’s discretion and the student’s preference. Lessons could be at the teacher’s home or private studio, outdoors like a backyard or public park, or online only.

How much do lessons cost?

Tuition is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Our passion is to provide free lessons to those in need, but paid lessons are an important part of our mission as well. Fees are determined on a sliding scale, but a good rule of thumb for full-priced lessons is $1/minute.

How often are lessons?

Bi-weekly (twice a week) sessions are strongly encouraged, although weekly lessons have become the new normal during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Two 30 minute lessons per week are preferable to one 60 minute session per week. Keep in mind that traditionally music lessons were part of a student’s daily life. This is all based on the way that the human mind learns. That said, in the end it is entirely up to the student. Bi-monthly, quarterly, or even one-off sessions are also options.
