FAQs - for teachers

Do my students have to be beginners?

No. It is important to understand that “beginner’s mind” refers to a state of mind which beginners have naturally, and which masters of their art strive to cultivate. This even applies to just living life in general. You may take students of any level. You may even choose to accept only advanced students.

Do all of my students have to have free lessons?

No. We encourage taking students who need financial assistance, as this is an important part of our mission, but you are only required to have one student who receives free lessons. The number of students who receive free and discounted lessons from us depends on available funds and the needs of individual students.

Do I have to follow some kind of strict rules for how I teach my lessons?

No, but we want to work with teachers who share at least the broad strokes of our teaching philosophy. The point is to attract teachers who already think similarly to the way that we do, and who conduct their lessons accordingly. If you never teach your students to play by ear, never have them listen to music, always rely on sheet music first, never have them learn on a viscerally physical level, never engage in improvisation on some level, never play music for them yourself, then those are problems and we do not want to have our name associated with that kind of teaching.

How much will I get paid?

Ideally you will be paid normal rates for all of your students, regardless of what they pay. We are a charitable organization, but we also aim to provide a legitimate source of income for our teachers. You may choose to donate some of your time as well.
